Demonstration of Lighthouse Equipment
The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society are inviting the public to discover the working secrets of the lighthouses that have helped protect visiting ships and Nova Scotia's coastlines.
Members of the society and museum curator Dan Conlin will explain and demonstrate lighthouse equipment for the special hands-on display on Wednesday, March 23.
"This is a fun and rare opportunity to make a fog horn roar or see a small light turn a beautiful crystal lens into a glowing orb of fire," said Mr. Conlin. "It is especially significant now because these sounds and lights are rapidly disappearing from our coastlines."
Visitors will learn how lightkeepers lit their lamps and sounded their foghorns in the era when Nova Scotia had more than 200 staffed light stations.
A demonstration begins at 7:30 p.m. at the museum, 1675 Lower Water St., Halifax. Reports of regular society activities will be provided at 7 p.m. and the public is welcome.
Admission is free but donations to the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society are appreciated. For more information see the museum website at maritime.museum.gov.ns.ca.
