TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Province Dedicates Land for Shubie Park

The Nova Scotia government is giving the Shubenacadie Canal Commission control of 14 acres of land adjacent to Shubie Park in Dartmouth.

Transportation and Public Works Minister Ron Russell, said today, March 3, that his department is turning over a parcel of land along the shore of Lake Micmac and beside Highway 118 to the Department of Natural Resources. The Shubenacadie Canal Commission will be given full control of the parcel by Natural Resources.

Mr. Russell said, "We are dedicating a significant amount of green space to Shubie Park for the enjoyment of area residents and visitors. This transfer guarantees the land will be forever preserved as park land."

"This land," said Bernard Hart, chairman of the Shubenacadie Canal Commission, "is a contiguous part of Shubie Park and its future use is important to protecting the lake system and the long-term development of the park."

Mr. Russell said the Shubenacadie Canal is an important historic landmark. He applauded the commission for its efforts in ensuring that the canal and the park are preserved for current and future generations.

"The canal commission will be good stewards of this land and will protect valuable park land from future development," Mr. Russell said.

The commission currently is responsible for the canal system and land bordering either side of the canal and will assume responsibility for the additional 14 acres.

Transportation and Public Works will transfer the land as soon as a new survey is completed.
