LakeCity Woodworkers Receives $250,000 Grant

LakeCity Woodworkers is building a better future thanks to a $250,000 grant to support employment programs for people who have experienced mental health difficulties, Community Services Minister David Morse announced today, March 4.

"LakeCity offers its participants an important mix of high quality training and employment opportunities, in a way that recognizes their strengths and challenges," said Community Services Minister David Morse. "This funding will help ensure LakeCity can continue to provide these important services -- services that contribute to individual development and offer high quality furniture to consumers."

LakeCity Woodworkers started 23 years ago in Dartmouth with a small variety of shelving manufactured by a handful of mental health consumers supported by a few woodworkers. Today, LakeCity's retail store offers a range of high quality solid wood products manufactured by about 50 mental health consumers, with the training and guidance of experienced woodworkers and cabinet makers.

"This funding will help us enlarge our facility and furniture building operation, which will allow for more participants and staff," said LakeCity executive director Chris Fyles. "We appreciate this support, and look forward to a strengthened program for mental health consumers."
