TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Tenders Called For Road Work in Cape Breton

Residents and visitors to Cape Breton will see further improvements to highways this summer.

The province announced tenders today, Feb. 23, for repaving sections of Highway 105 in Inverness County and Highway 125 in Cape Breton County.

"These road improvements will benefit tourists, businesses and residents in the area," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "The upcoming construction season will see continued improvements to roads in Cape Breton and throughout the province."

The tender for Highway 105 is for repaving about five kilometres of the highway, beginning two kilometres east of the provincial park in Whycocomagh. The work is expected to be complete by the end of October.

The tender for Highway 125 is for repaving two sections of the existing twinned section of the highway, which is about nine kilometres. This work will take place between Exit 4 at Balls Creek and Highway 105 and is expected to be complete by the end of July.

Both tenders close March 16.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains 4,100 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from district offices in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
