Spring Weight Restrictions in the Forecast

TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Spring Weight Restrictions in the Forecast

Despite Shubenacadie Sam's forecast that winter will stick around for another four weeks, an early thaw and mild temperatures mean an earlier than usual notice to truckers to prepare for spring weight restrictions on Nova Scotia roads.

The precise date of spring weight restrictions depends on weather conditions. Last year, the restrictions came into effect on March 10. In 2003, it was exactly one week later, on March 17.

"Our department imposes restrictions on heavy trucks to help protect roads weakened when the frost leaves the ground," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "We'll be monitoring the roads daily to determine when the restrictions will begin."

The minister added that the department's vehicle compliance inspections are more frequent during this period.

A list of all roads exempt from the restrictions will be advertised in newspapers and on the department's website at www.gov.ns.ca/tran .
