African Nova Scotian To Receive Order of Canada
AFRICAN NOVA SCOTIAN AFFAIRS--African Nova Scotian To Receive Order of Canada
A member of the African Nova Scotian community has been appointed to the Order of Canada.
Wanda Thomas Bernard, director of the Maritime School of Social Work, has been selected to receive one of the country's premiere honours.
"Dr. Thomas Bernard is truly a worthy recipient of the Order of Canada. Receiving this prestigious award is a reflection of her dedication, commitment and compassion for others," said Barry Barnet, Minister of African Nova Scotian Affairs.
Dr. Thomas Bernard has researched and worked tirelessly in the areas of anti-racism, africentric perspectives, black masculinity, black families, black women's health and the health of African Canadians in general.
Her goal has been to build links between academics, practitioners and the community, particularly the African Nova Scotian community. She is frequently asked to conduct workshops or present on these issues and has been published in many trade publications.
"Dr. Thomas Bernard is a positive role model and one of our most dynamic community leaders," said Wayn Hamilton, interim executive director of the Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs. "We send best wishes and congratulate her; she has made us all very proud."
Dr. Thomas Bernard and six other Nova Scotians were among 74 new appointments made to the Order of Canada on Feb. 8. Recipients will be inducted at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
