Biomedical Waste Disposal System Sought

The Department of Health has begun searching for a new way to dispose of Nova Scotia's biomedical waste.

The department invited contractors today, Feb. 1, to submit proposals on the best and safest way to proceed.

"We will look at all options that come through the tendering process," said Health Minister Angus MacIsaac. "I'm confident we will find a solution that is best for Nova Scotia and that will meet all environmental standards."

Currently, Nova Scotia generates about 2 million kilograms of biomedical waste, most of which is plastic. It is now transported to Cape Breton to an incinerator where it is destroyed. That contract for services expires at the end of the year.

Contractors have until Feb. 17 to respond to the call for expressions of interest for a new contract to dispose of the waste. A selection committee will then decide on a short-list of potential candidates. The successful proposal must undergo a comprehensive environmental assessment conducted by the Department of Environment and Labour.
