Unique Local Partnership Promotes Local Talent

N.S. FILM DEVELOPMENT CORP.--Unique Local Partnership Promotes Local Talent

Empire Theatres and the Nova Scotia Film Development Corporation are teaming up for the third year running in their successful Screening Nights partnership.

Four times a year at the Oxford Theatre on Quinpool Road, Halifax, the partners show productions filmed in the province, by Nova Scotians.

"The screenings are a way for local residents to see the terrific productions coming from the province's filmmakers," said Ann MacKenzie, CEO of the film corporation. "We believe Nova Scotians welcome the chance to experience more of the exciting work coming from this talented group of professionals."

The 2005 lineup opens with a screwball political satire set in Cape Breton, Tar Ponds Loonie Giveaway. Tar Ponds is self- financed at a cost of $25,000 and will be screened on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.

Tar Ponds is the story of Carmie and Lefty, two zany Cape Bretoners who are trying to buy the Sydney Tar Ponds to build a golf course on the contaminated site. In the film, a fictitious Nova Scotia government is selling the Tar Ponds for $1. As it happens, Carmie and Lefty are not the only ones who want to get their hands on the real estate.

Tar Ponds will be preceded by a short film from local filmmaker Jay Dahl entitled Don't. Don't Break Up with Megan. This film is a comedy about a young man's attempts to cut short his current romantic attachment.

"Empire Theatres is delighted to support film and documentary productions that showcase local talent as well as the province's many excellent locations," says Dean Leland, director of marketing for Empire Theatres.

Formed in 1978, Empire Theatres Limited is a Canadian owned subsidiary of Empire Company Limited. It has its corporate headquarters in New Glasgow and regional offices in Halifax. Empire Theatres operates 27 theatres (plus one drive-in) representing 176 screens in Atlantic Canada including one IMAX theatre in Halifax.

The Nova Scotia Film Development Corporation is a provincial Crown corporation reporting to the minister of Economic Development. The corporation provides a wide range of programs and services to build the capacity and competitiveness of the province's film, television and new media industries.

Additional Empire Screening Nights will be held on May 25 and Nov. 30, with movie titles yet to be decided. For further information, visit www.film.ns.ca .
