Boards Get Early Look at Teaching Grads

Nova Scotia's school boards will get an early chance to hire this year's graduating teachers at the third annual Early Hiring Job Fair.

The fair will be held at each of four Nova Scotia universities offering a bachelor of education degree. The key partners in the public education system visit the campuses to meet students who are graduating this year.

Boards are looking in particular this year for teachers in mathematics, physics, technology education, French and family studies.

"This event is all about opportunity," said Education Minister Jamie Muir. "Other provinces are eager to recruit our teaching grads, so this gives our boards first chance to hire our best and brightest. It also gives graduating students a chance to see the great potential for a career in Nova Scotia."

The job fair will allow students to meet representatives from the province's school boards, the Nova Scotia registrar of teacher certification, the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, the Nova Scotia School Boards Association, and the Nova Scotia Teachers Credit Union.

The event, organized by the Department of Education, is just one aspect of school board recruiting programs. The boards will continue to hire for the 2005-06 school year through September.

The fair will be held at Université Sainte-Anne on Thursday, Jan. 6; St. Francis Xavier University on Thursday, Jan. 13; Acadia University on Tuesday, Jan. 18; and Mount Saint Vincent on Friday, Jan. 28.

Current term and substitute teachers, teachers who graduated before 2005, or those who graduated from education programs at a university outside Nova Scotia can learn more about employment openings by contacting individual school boards.

Board contact information is available on the Department of Education website at www.ednet.ns.ca .
