Province Says "Let it Snow" at Cape Smokey
Snow or no snow ... Mother Nature doesn't hold all the cards for Ski Cape Smokey this season. The province is providing $120,000 in top-up funding to allow the Ski Cape Smokey Society to buy snow-making equipment and a groomer to keep the hill pristine for snow enthusiasts.
"The province is pleased to be part of the revitalization of Cape Smokey," Economic Development Minister Ernest Fage said today, Dec. 21. "It's wonderful that Nova Scotians have this great outdoor facility that provides a venue for a variety of winter sports."
For the second consecutive year, provincial funding has ensured the operation of the hill. In 2004, the society recruited an experienced winter resort operator. At that time, the province provided start-up funding for a successful summer operation that led right into a successful winter season. This year, the summer operation was so successful, the society was able to contribute $25,000 to the funding to supply the snow-making and grooming equipment.
"Thanks to the commitment of all levels of government and the community, this year we will provide the best ever snow experience for skiers and boarders, near and far," said Marie Cummings, manager of the resort. "We've already sold more season passes than last year and we are experiencing interest both in people seeking employment opportunities and those pursuing a great snow day."
The $625,000 equipment project is being cost shared by the Nova Scotia Office of Economic Development, the Municipality of Victoria County, Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and the Ski Cape Smokey Society.
