Demolition of Old Halifax Infirmary

Transportation and Public Works (to Oct. 2007)

The Old Halifax Infirmary is coming down.

A contract has been awarded to demolish the building and clean up the site.

"This unsafe and unusable building will be removed to make way for the future," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "It's a large project and we'll work with the contractor to keep noise and dust levels to a minimum."

Murray Demolition has been awarded the $4.1-million contract and will begin tearing down the building in January.

Following the removal of hazardous materials, such as asbestos, the building will be taken down in sections with large equipment, beginning in late January.

Murray Demolition has been involved in demolishing other hospitals, including the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, and is currently dismantling the Sydney steel mill.

The demolition of the Old Halifax Infirmary will be completed by December 2005.
