French-language Services Law Celebrated
The Acadian community marked a milestone today, Dec. 9, with the proclamation of the French-language Services Act. Francophone leaders and government officials celebrated the event at a reception at Province House.
"This law will expand the reach of French language services in our province, ensuring that French-speaking Nova Scotians will have the opportunity to access government programs and initiatives in their native tongue," said Premier John Hamm.
A number of provincial government departments have already begun developing plans to improve or expand French-language services.
"Today marks an important step in the provision of French- language services in Nova Scotia," said Acadian Affairs Minister Chris d'Entremont. "Because of this new law, for the first time Acadians and other French speaking Nova Scotians can expect more public services provided to them in French."
Acadian Affairs will be working very closely with provincial departments and agencies to support them as they develop their own French-language services plans.
Bill 111, the French-language Services Act, was introduced in the fall session of the House of Assembly after consultation with members of the Acadian and francophone community.
