Port Clyde Bridge Closed
The Port Clyde Bridge in Shelburne County is closed to traffic until further notice.
Engineers with the Department of Transportation and Public Works closed the bridge today, Nov. 25, to protect the safety of motorists. Staff inspected the bridge on Wednesday, Nov. 24, and recommended closing it until further notice, due to concerns over the stability of the structure.
Local motorists are advised to use the Clyde River bridge on Highway 103 as a detour.
The department has been routinely checking the Port Clyde Bridge since it limited crossing to trucks weighing less than 12 tonnes on Oct. 22. The bridge is about 3.4 kilometres south of Highway 103 on Route 309.
Engineering consultants will be brought in to look at options that would allow motorists to safely resume crossing the river. The 110-year-old bridge had been scheduled to be replaced in mid- 2005.
