EMO Urges Caution as Storm Hits the Province

The provincial Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) is asking residents to take precautions as an early winter storm is causing major power outages and making driving conditions treacherous throughout Nova Scotia.

"We are working closely with local emergency measures organizations, Nova Scotia Power and other related organizations to ensure we have the most up-to-date information," said Ernest Fage, Minister responsible for the Emergency Measures Act. "Everyone is doing their best in responding to the storm, but the total impact on power lines is still being assessed. Safety is our number one priority and at this time the safest thing individuals can do is to remain indoors and wait for the roads to be cleared and the power to be restored."

People are advised to listen to the radio for updated weather information or public-safety bulletins.

"Neighbors helping neighbors is also critical during any storm or emergency," said Mr. Fage. "Individuals are encouraged to contact people who may be more vulnerable, such as seniors or those living alone, to see if they need assistance."

Everyone should also have an emergency kit ready at all times. In addition to a battery-operated radio, this kit should include: food; a supply of water; clothing; blankets; medication; flashlight; extra batteries; and a first aid kit. Individuals who do not have this kit ready should take the time today to gather the items that are currently available in their homes.
