Changes Coming to Liquor Control Act

Public Prosecution Service

Attorney General Michael Baker will issue a written directive to Crown attorneys to stop prosecutions involving the transportation of unopened liquor in a vehicle.

"That particular section of the Liquor Control Act is confusing and doesn't clearly address the real issue," said Mr. Baker. "The real issue is having opened liquor in the passenger compartment of a vehicle."

Mr. Baker said prosecutions involving opened liquor in a vehicle will continue as normal.

Changes to the legislation are expected in the spring.

Ernest Fage, the Minister responsible for the Liquor Control Act, plans to introduce legislation to clarify the sections regarding the transportation of unopened liquor.

"I want to make sure that drivers are not penalized when they are acting responsibly," said Mr. Fage. "My aim is to clarify the legislation."
