AGRICULTURE/FISHERIES--4-H Leaders and Members Attend Prestigious Conferences

Several 4-H members and leaders from Nova Scotia have been selected to attend two prestigious national 4-H conferences in Toronto during National 4-H Week, Nov. 1-7.

Seven Nova Scotia 4-H members have been given a National 4-H Travel Award, enabling them to be part of a 60-member delegation from across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom attending the National 4-H Member Conference. This conference, the Canadian 4-H Council's longest-running national 4-H program, will feature an agricultural theme each day. Themes include production, processing, retailing, distribution, marketing and careers. Throughout the week, members will participate in a variety of social, cultural and educational sessions that encourage group discussion, teamwork and leadership development.

"A National 4-H Travel Award recognizes 4-H members and leaders for their outstanding work in their communities," said Chris d'Entremont, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. "These 4-H conferences address agricultural issues, strengthen leadership skills, and provide opportunities for exchanging ideas."

The Nova Scotia members who won travel awards are: Colin Hirtle, Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co.; Dwight Kouwenberg, Pugwash, Cumberland Co.; Melinda Daigle, Kingston, Kings Co.; Jason Lewis and Steven Nicholson, Sydney, Cape Breton Regional Municipality; Mary Frances MacDonald, St. Andrews, Antigonish Co.; and Jessica Rankin, Mabou, Inverness Co.

The National 4-H Volunteer Leaders' Conference will run concurrently with the 4-H member conference. The leaders' conference brings together about 50 adult 4-H volunteers from across Canada for a week of leader training.
