Registry Of Deeds To Stay in Pictou

The province's Registry of Deeds office will remain in the Town of Pictou, Premier John Hamm announced today, Nov. 1.

"The Registry of Deeds office in Pictou has been an important service to the community for many years, carrying much historical significance for local residents," said the premier. "After careful consideration of community needs and alternate space options within the Town of Pictou, it was important for government to reassure the community that this office would not be moved to another town."

Last month, the Department of Justice announced that it was moving Family Court proceedings from New Glasgow to Pictou. As a result of the additional physical space pressures that this new service in the Town of Pictou would provide, transferring the Registry of Deeds office to the New Glasgow area was considered.

"We have listened to the community, reviewed the physical space options within the Town of Pictou and have decided that no change to the location of the Registry of Deeds will result in it leaving the Shire Town of Pictou," added the premier.

Officials from the departments of Justice and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations will meet soon to determine which is the best option to keep the Registry of Deeds office in Pictou.
