Rewards For Nova Scotians Who Waste Less
Nova Scotians will be rewarded for being good to the environment during Waste Reduction Week, Oct. 18 to 24. Three contests and a host of other activities are taking place with the theme Too Good to Waste.
"Nova Scotians know that this province is too good to waste and we're dedicated to keeping it clean and beautiful," said Environment and Labour Minister Kerry Morash. "Waste Reduction Week is a great time to look at our habits, celebrate our successes, and take new steps to waste less and be even better to the environment."
This year, Waste Reduction Week events include:
-
Get Rewarded: Sponsored by the Resource Recovery Fund Board, this event will see municipal educators hitting the streets and giving out prizes when they see people doing something good for the environment like recycling or using a travel mug. Educators will also visit businesses offering waste reduction tips and handing out blue boxes for recycling.
-
Nova Scotia Recycles: Students in grades primary to 12 are invited to participate in this contest. It focuses on waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting. Winners will receive more than $28,000 in prizes, cash and scholarships.
-
Just Between Families: Families are asked to share their waste reduction strategies for a chance to win a family adventure package at Liscombe Lodge in Guysborough County or a Tupperware prize package.
-
Business: On Wednesday, Oct. 20, Mr. Morash and Ron Colman, executive director of GPI Atlantic, will address business leaders on their role in protecting the environment at the annual Business Breakfast at Casino Nova Scotia Hotel.
-
Enviro Depots: Nova Scotians can fill out ballots for prize packages at any of the province's 83 Enviro Depots. Prize packages range from blue boxes filled with products made from recycled materials to gift certificates for paint from the Nova Scotia Paint Recycling Company.
-
Green Office: Nova Scotians can download a free screensaver with tips for wasting less in the workplace. It serves as a regular reminder to reuse paper, conserve energy and more.
