Sorrow At Passing of Nova Scotia Legislative Historian
PREMIER'S OFFICE--Sorrow At Passing of Nova Scotia Legislative Historian
Premier John Hamm today, Oct. 15, expressed sorrow at the passing of former Nova Scotia legislative librarian and historian Shirley Elliott.
"Shirley Elliot, who was inducted last year into the Order of Nova Scotia, was an outstanding scholar, librarian, author, community volunteer and mentor," Premier Hamm said. "She has always been respected, admired and trusted for her contributions to Nova Scotia's heritage."
Ms. Elliott served for almost three decades at the province's legislative library -- from 1954 to 1982. She integrated all of the valuable materials around Province House into a collection of Nova Scotiana unparalleled in the province. She also transformed the legislative library into a modern research library. Her books and articles are key resources for researchers and students, and help to create in Nova Scotians a clear understanding of the province's rich history.
"Her talent, vast experience, knowledge base and commitment to her community will be sorely missed," the premier said.
Ms. Elliott returned to Wolfville, her birthplace, after she retired. Her work at home, including the transformation of the Wolfville train station into the town's public library, will also serve as lasting testaments to her thoughtful, caring commitment to literacy and Nova Scotia's heritage.
