Road Improvements in Western District

TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Road Improvements in Western District

Three counties in the western part of the province will see road and bridge improvements this fall.

The Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Public Works will spend about $2.6 million on road and bridge improvements in Annapolis, Kings and Lunenburg counties.

"These improvements will strengthen the network of roads and bridges in the western part of Nova Scotia," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "Better roads and bridges means improved services and safer travel for all motorists."

In Annapolis County, more than six kilometres of Highway 101 will be repaved, from the Trunk 8 overpass at Exit 22 at Lequille.

In Lunenburg and Kings counties, two sections of Trunk 12 will be repaved. One section includes about five kilometres south on Forties Road in New Ross. The other section begins at the Lunenburg County line to Legge Road in Kings County, about three kilometres.

The repaving contracts were awarded to Dexter Construction. Work is expected to be complete this fall.

In Lunenburg County, R. J. Dickey Contracting is working on repairs to the Old Town Bridge in Bridgewater, which should be finished in October.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains 4,100 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from offices in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
