Designing a New Halifax High School
TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS -Designing a New Halifax High School
The province has chosen the design for the future downtown Halifax high school. The winning design was proposed by the architectural firm Fowler Bauld and Mitchell, which will also administer the contract for the construction of the school.
"It was absolutely critical that the design of the new school fit in with its unique location next to the historic Citadel Hill," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "We have a first-class design for a building that the students of central Halifax will be calling their own in just two years' time."
The new 1,200-student Halifax high school, which will replace Queen Elizabeth and St. Patrick's high schools, will be built at the current site of the Bell Road campus of the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). A new NSCC campus will be built on a 25-acre site on the Dartmouth waterfront.
The value of the award to Fowler Bauld and Mitchell is $859,000. The firm will continue to work closely with the departments of Education and Transportation and Public Works, Halifax Regional School Board, and the school steering team on the design of the new school.
The school is expected to open in September 2006. The total project cost is $21 million.
