Sorrow At Passing of Former MP
Premier John Hamm today, Sept. 4, expressed sorrow at the passing of former Nova Scotia Member of Parliament Robert McCleave.
"Bob McCleave was a well-respected journalist, lawyer, parliamentarian and judge," said Premier Hamm. "He served his constituents in and around the greater Halifax area extremely well for many years."
First elected Member of Parliament for Halifax in 1957, Mr. McCleave was re-elected in 1958 and 1962. He returned as Member of Parliament for Halifax in 1965 and served as the member for Halifax-East Hants continuously from 1968 to 1977. During his time in office, he served terms as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons. He left Parliament in 1977 and became a judge.
"After he retired from the bench, Bob resumed his interest in public life and could always be counted on to bring his valuable and varied experiences to the debates of the day that mattered most," added the premier. "On behalf of all Nova Scotians, Genesta and I would like to convey our deepest sympathies to the McCleave family on this sad loss."
