Contracts Awarded for Road Work on the Eastern Shore

TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Contracts Awarded for Road Work on the Eastern Shore

A well-travelled route along the Eastern Shore will have new pavement this fall.

A $1.4-million contract has recently been awarded to repave more than 10 kilometres of Trunk 7.

"The province is fulfilling its commitment to upgrade Trunk 7 to handle heavy commercial trucks," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "Improvements to this popular route will provide a smoother ride for motorists travelling on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore."

The contract is for repaving two sections of Trunk 7 in Halifax Regional Municipality -- from the Highway 107 access road to the west end of Pinehill Drive; and from 5.5 kilometres east of Upper Lakeville Road, easterly towards Ship Harbour.

The contract was awarded to S.W. Weeks Construction. Work is expected to be completed by Oct. 31.

Once Trunk 7 is repaved and strengthened, commercial trucks will be able to carry full loads along the entire length of the highway, boosting the economic strength of the local community.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains 4,100 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from district offices in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
