Co-operation Working for Nova Scotians

A record-breaking number of jobs, more doctors and nurses, lower auto insurance costs, greater support for seniors, more money for roads, schools and hospitals and Nova Scotia's third consecutive balanced budget are among the highlights of the first year of minority government.

Premier John Hamm today, Aug. 18, released the annual progress report of the government's Blueprint for building a better Nova Scotia.

"By working together, all MLAs are finding common ground to deliver on our commitments to the people of Nova Scotia," said Premier Hamm. "As government, we will continue to co-operate with everyone who shares our belief in growing the economy, living within our means, better access to health care and improving results in the classroom."

The progress report showed that more than 100 commitments outlined in the government's four-year plan have either been completely fulfilled or significantly advanced.

Among the commitments made and kept are increased funding and/or new initiatives to:

  • reduce wait times and hire more health-care professionals;
  • promote healthier living;
  • further reduce class sizes, with per student funding up by $300 over the last year;
  • continue implementation of the province's growth strategy, Opportunities for Prosperity, resulting in 15,000 new jobs over the last 12 months; and
  • protect property owners and consumers.

Premier Hamm said this year's accountability report demonstrates government's commitment to make significant investments in priority areas while living within our means.

"Despite the challenges we face as a minority government we've worked hard to honour our commitments to Nova Scotians and we will continue to do so for as long as parts of the Blueprint remain unfulfilled," added the premier.

He concluded by thanking all MLAs and Nova Scotia's public service for their efforts in building a better Nova Scotia.

"The progress we achieved over the past year is, in large part, due to the efforts of thousands of dedicated public servants who are committed to making Nova Scotia a better place to live, work and raise a family," said Premier Hamm.
