Extension Planned for Waterfront Trail in Bedford
WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT CORP.--Extension Planned for Waterfront Trail in Bedford
The Bedford waterfront will soon offer additional opportunity for the public to enjoy enhanced access to Bedford Basin.
Waterfront Development Corporation Limited, a provincial Crown corporation, announced today, Aug. 4, that a contract has been awarded to Dexter Construction for development in Phase II of the Bedford waterfront. The project will include construction of a south jetty, public boat ramp and parking area, and continuation of the popular waterfront trail to the completed south jetty in Mill Cove.
Construction of the $800,000 project will begin immediately with completion scheduled for early this fall.
"This initiative is an excellent example of the Waterfront Development Corporation's commitment to the public's enjoyment of Bedford Basin and Halifax Harbour and paves the way for further economic development opportunities," said Ernest Fage, Minister of Economic Development.
Eric Thomson, chair of the Waterfront Development Corporation, said the benefits of Phase I -- with the housing and creation of DeWolf Park -- are evident.
"Residents of Bedford and surrounding areas have been very patient with the fill operation over the last few years," he said. "These Phase II facilities will offer the additional and much-prized public access to the recreation potential of Bedford Basin for the community and all Nova Scotians."
The new public facilities are the first step in the planning and development of Phase II of the waterfront area. Waterfront Development Corporation Limited and Halifax Regional Municipality will soon continue with additional planning and public consultation to determine the future development opportunities, both private and public, for Phase II.
