Sambro Island Lighthouse Featured on New Coin

COMMUNICATIONS N.S.--Sambro Island Lighthouse Featured on New Coin

A photo of the Sambro Island lighthouse, taken by the late Headley Doty, is depicted on a new coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint.

Born in Yarmouth, Mr. Doty joined the provincial government as a photographer in 1946. He established the first still photography section of the former Bureau of Information. He retired from the public service in 1970.

"Lighthouses are an important part of Nova Scotia's landscape and heritage, so it is very symbolic to have the Sambro Island lighthouse featured on this new coin," said Ernest Fage, minister responsible for Communications Nova Scotia. "As a province, we should all be very proud to have the work of a talented Nova Scotian depicted on this coin."

The Sambro Island lighthouse, located at the entrance to the Halifax Harbour, is the oldest working lighthouse in North America.

"The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to commemorate the rich history of Canada's historic lighthouses," said David Dingwall, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "As one of North America's oldest operating lighthouses, the 2004 Sambro Island Lighthouse coin has appropriately launched this collector series."

The new limited edition coin is the first coin to be unveiled in the Royal Canadian Mint's 2004 Lighthouse Collection.
