Proposed Changes to Air Quality Regulations Released

ENVIRONMENT/LABOUR--Proposed Changes to Air Quality Regulations Released

Proposed changes to Nova Scotia's air quality regulations will target smog and acid rain.

"We made specific commitments to improving air quality," said Environment and Labour Minister Kerry Morash. "The regulatory changes we're proposing will help us meet those commitments."

The proposed changes reduce allowable emissions of sulphur dioxide for the province as a whole and for specific emitters.

Other changes under consideration would limit the amount of sulphur contained in heavy fuel oils and reduce emission of nitrogen oxides, which play a significant role in making smog.

Mr. Morash said the proposed amendments will make it easier for companies to account for their air emissions. "We want to be able to bring our reporting requirements in line with national requirements. That will make it easier for companies and regulators to ensure consistency and improve efficiency."

People wishing to review and comment on the proposed changes should obtain a copy of the summary document, which was released today, July 5. It is available at any Nova Scotia Environment and Labour Office, on the website at www.gov.ns.ca/enla/ or by calling (toll free) 1-800-567-7544. The deadline for comments is Monday, Aug. 9.
