Provincial 4-H Camp Opens With New Director
AGRICULTURE/FISHERIES--Provincial 4-H Camp Opens With New Director
On July 4, Camp Rankin, the provincial 4-H camp, will welcome 240 4-H members and a new camp director.
"For the last 32 years Camp Rankin has hosted 4-H members from across the province, providing them with a positive educational program and a memorable camping experience," said Chris d'Entremont, Minister of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. "The camp will offer 4-H youth a broad spectrum of skill-building opportunities."
The 4-H campers will learn about leadership, healthy living and skills development at five camps being held this summer.
"This year the camp program will emphasize individuality and creativity," said Bud Brown, the new director of Camp Rankin. "We'll be developing a variety of themes involving cultural heritage and incorporating them into our day to day activities."
Mr. Brown brings a wealth of experience to his post as camp director. He held the position of director of recreation in New Glasgow for 28 years, has 15 years of camping experience and is also a former 4-H leader. Camp counsellors with several years of 4-H experience will help lead the youth through traditional camp activities and assist Mr. Brown.
Camp Rankin campers also learn drama, art, nature, first aid, hiking swimming and canoeing. Participants often make lasting friendships and have memorable experiences that keep them coming back each year.
In 1972, Camp Rankin was built by volunteers as a Centennial project of the Richmond County 4-H Leaders' Council. It is situated on 60 acres of land at Cape George, near St. Peters. The recreational and camp activities for 4-H members at Camp Rankin are provided by Richmond County Leaders' Council and administered by the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.
