July 1st Paid Holiday
The provincial department of Environment and Labour reminds employers and employees that July 1, Canada Day, is one of five paid holidays in Nova Scotia.
Employees are entitled to receive their regular pay for the holiday and have the day off.
Where a collective agreement exists, employers and employees must abide by the terms and conditions regarding holiday pay set out in the agreement. If the workplace does not have a collective agreement, it follows the laws set out in the province's Labour Standards Code.
Employees who are required to work on Canada Day may include emergency responders, food service staff, or call centre employees.
A Guide to the Labour Standards Code is available on the department's website at www.gov.ns.ca/enla/labstand/.
