N.S. INSURANCE REVIEW BOARD--Insurance Board Receiving Valuable Input

The Nova Scotia Insurance Review Board is continuing to accept written submissions on two important insurance issues until June 30.

More than 250 people have already attended public hearings held across the province and provided valuable information regarding:

  • the rates and availability of fire, other property, casualty, and liability insurance for homeowners, tenants, non-profit organizations and small business; and
  • the use of gender as a risk classification factor in determining automobile insurance rates.

Eighty-four verbal presentations were made to the board and many more submissions were provided by fax, mail and e-mail. Thirty- five of the verbal presentations were from the non-profit sector representing about 1,000 organizations. Some of the non-profit groups included legions, snowmobile clubs, sport organizations, recreation organizations, volunteer fire departments, and several other volunteer organizations.

The board is responsible for conducting studies on the two insurance topics and reporting back to government by Nov. 1.

The Insurance Review Board was appointed in December 2003 as part of government auto insurance reforms designed to protect consumers. The new board will review rates and rules and will monitor the system to ensure reforms are working for consumers.

Written submissions can be sent to the board by e-mail at [email protected] , by fax at 902-428-5781, or by mail to the Nova Scotia Insurance Review Board, P.O. Box 697, Halifax, N.S., B3J 2T8.
