Lieutenant-Governor Presents Awards in Sherbrooke

Two individuals who played a significant role in the early development of the Sherbrooke Village restoration were honoured on Saturday, June 12 at the third edition of the Sir John Coape Sherbrooke Heritage Awards.

Lt.-Gov. Myra Freeman presented the awards to Aleah Lomas of Sherbrooke and Robert Frame of Dartmouth during a ceremony at the What Cheer Tea Room in Sherbrooke Village.

The Sir John Coape Sherbrooke Heritage Awards are presented every two to three years to "persons who have made significant contributions to the preservation and promotion of the heritage of Historic Sherbrooke Village, Guysborough County and Nova Scotia."

In her address to the recipients and guests, the lieutenant- governor spoke of the importance of preserving the links between heritage and communities.

"The Sir John Coape Sherbrooke Heritage awards being presented tonight to these individuals are a testament to the importance placed on heritage preservation and development, not only by the recipients, but by the organization that makes this event possible," she said. "To our honourees, we say thank you for your years of dedication. To members of the Historic Sherbrooke Village Development Society, thank you for your efforts on behalf of heritage in Sherbrooke."

Aleah Lomas has been an active participant in numerous volunteer organizations, both in Sherbrooke and further afield. As the wife of a member of the Canadian Foreign Service, Mrs. Lomas carried out volunteer service in Brussels, Beijing, Detroit and Ottawa. She was a member of the Sherbrooke Restoration Commission in its formative years and served as chair from 1972 to 1975. She is currently chair of the award-winning Sherbrooke Communities in Bloom Committee.

Mr. Frame was the first director of Sherbrooke Village, a post he held from 1970 to 1973. He continued his association with Sherbrooke Village during his tenure as director of the museum services division of Nova Scotia Museum and later as assistant director of the Nova Scotia Museum Complex. Mr. Frame's writings have been published in many industry-related publications including the Muse -- the Journal of Canadian Museums Association -- for which he as authored several articles.

The next Sir John Coape Sherbrooke Awards ceremony is tentatively scheduled for the fall of 2006.
