ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT--Province Signs Memorandum With Regional Development Group

The province signed a memorandum of understanding today, June 10, reaffirming its 10 year partnership with Nova Scotia's regional Development Authorities (RDAs).

Premier John Hamm and Economic Development Minister Ernest Fage joined Nova Scotia Association of Regional Development Authorities president Frank Anderson at a signing ceremony at Province House.

"Two years ago we cemented our support for the RDAs with a multi- year investment," said Premier Hamm. "Today we take this working relationship to the next level and put our commitment in writing, because we know the value of supporting economic growth at the community level."

The memorandum formally recognizes the relationship between the province and the association and includes the objectives and philosophy shared in their approach to community development.

"The province is proud to partner with the regional development authorities," said Mr. Fage. "This memorandum of understanding symbolizes our appreciation for the vital role they play in supporting our economic growth strategy -- Opportunities for Prosperity."

The Nova Scotia Association of Regional Development Authorities is the umbrella organization for Nova Scotia's 13 RDAs. The RDAs play a role that is recognized as unique in Canada, with core funding provided by all three levels of government.

"This next step in our partnership holds the promise of more economic and social benefits for Nova Scotians," said Mr. Anderson. "A formalized relationship will add to our ability to leverage other sources of funding to facilitate community and economic development."

June 2004 marks the 10th anniversary of the RDAs in Nova Scotia. Key accomplishments include attracting people and investment to rural Nova Scotia through programs like the successful Truro Tulip Festival, the Retirement Cape Breton Program that brought 500 Cape Bretoners back home to retire, and the Business Builders Program in Guysborough County that has helped about 40 student businesses annually.
