Heritage Featured At Museum Weekend

Nova Scotians are being encouraged to uncover treasures, exceptional objects and the unique stories that are part of their heritage this weekend, June 12 and 13, as more than 40 museums across Nova Scotia engage in the fun and hands-on activities of Museum Weekend.

"It's encouraging to see the variety of high quality museums in Nova Scotia," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. "The benefits of these museums are felt in communities throughout the province and this weekend there's something for all ages and interests."

Take a heritage hike, make a kite like Alexander Graham Bell, learn a new heritage skill or how to preserve treasured family photos during the ninth annual Museum Weekend. Participants may discover amazing facts about life at sea, hear the music of the past, sample old-fashioned recipes, take in a new exhibit, or seek out answers in a heritage hunt.

Nova Scotians can also get a new perspective on history through museum displays of local students' drawings. The artwork reflects heritage in the students' communities as part of the Museum Weekend I Spy Heritage contest.

Annual Museum Weekend events highlight the province's rich heritage and the significant role museums play in preserving and interpreting local culture and natural history.

"It's our heritage," said Mr. MacDonald. "This weekend is a great time to experience it."
