Remember D-Day Veterans
All Nova Scotians should take some time this weekend to pay tribute to the Canadians who fought during the D-Day invasion and Battle of Normandy, Premier John Hamm said today, June 4.
Sunday, June 6, marks the 60th anniversary of a critical turning point for allied countries in the Second World War. The government of Nova Scotia and Veterans Affairs Canada have worked with veterans to co-ordinate a parade, ecumenical service and reception in Halifax to commemorate the sacrifices made by D-Day veterans. Other events are also taking place throughout the province.
"The rights, freedoms and benefits enjoyed by Nova Scotians and all Canadians are due to the courage of the soldiers, sailors and airmen personnel who put their lives on the line on this fateful day," said the premier. "Many paid the ultimate price. We owe our veterans, as well as those lost in combat, a debt we can truly never repay."
The Halifax commemoration ceremony includes a veterans' parade along Windsor Street to the Halifax Forum. Other commemorative events will take place at the Halifax Forum, including a traditional military drum head ceremony. Following the ceremony, Premier John Hamm will host a reception for veterans, guests and visitors. The Halifax Forum is located at 2901 Windsor St.
"As Nova Scotians, let's thank our veterans and remember their fallen comrades for all they have done," added Premier Hamm.
