FINANCE--Hurricane Juan Recovery Fund Supports Community Organizations
Several community organizations affected by Hurricane Juan are getting a helping hand from the Nova Scotia Hurricane Juan Recovery Fund.
The fund administrators announced today, June 4, that about $235,000 will be distributed to 17 not-for-profit, charitable and volunteer agencies whose resources or property suffered from the effects of Hurricane Juan. Qualifying organizations not covered by the province's disaster financial assistance program were invited to apply for assistance.
The Metro Food Bank will receive $25,000 to help re-stock its shelves. Other organizations will get some help with repair work, including the MacDonald House Society in Lawrencetown which will receive $20,000.
"The generosity of the business community and the people of Nova Scotia is truly appreciated. These funds will now help these organizations to move forward with their clean-up and restoration projects," said Ernest Fage, Minister responsible for the Emergency Measures Act.
The Nova Scotia Hurricane Juan Recovery Fund administrators are Clay Coveyduck of Halifax, retired Royal Bank senior vice- president and general manager, Atlantic provinces; Arthur Peters of Halifax, retired archbishop, Anglican diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island; David Gilroy, retired chief administrative officer, Town of Truro, and Sheila Brown, president and vice-chancellor, Mount Saint Vincent University.
"We are pleased and grateful these four respected Nova Scotians volunteered to give their time and expertise to administer this fund on behalf of the province," said Mr. Fage.
The Nova Scotia government created the fund to assist community groups not eligible for insurance relief. That objective has been met and the fund is now closing.
DIAGEO Canada gave the largest corporate donation at $205,000, while Encana Corporation donated $25,000. Private donations totalled about $5,000.
