Students To Participate in Agriculture Workshops
AGRICULTURE/FISHERIES--Students To Participate in Agriculture Workshops
Terrarium displays, dairy barns, sensory gardens and embryos are some of the topics students will learn about during AgZone 2004, at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Bible Hill, May 28 and June 4.
"These workshops give Nova Scotia youth the opportunity to understand and appreciate our agriculture industry," said Chris d'Entremont, Minister of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.
The department's agriculture awareness committee, in partnership with the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, will host the event that is set to attract more than 600 students and teachers. This is the second year for the program. This year, the event will showcase five areas of agriculture: plant science, engineering, landscape horticulture, animal science and environmental science.
Students will participate through interactive workshops, will visit greenhouses and barns and learn about composting. They will also learn how to make terrariums (sealed glass globes containing growing plants) and how to match seed types with plants.
"The combination of lessons and hands-on experiences these students receive will show them how science and agriculture play a role in the different aspects of their every day lives," said the minister.
The program takes place from 9:15 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and is open to students in grades five and six. For more information contact the department's Agriculture Awareness office at 902-893- 6598.
