TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Road Improvements for Colchester County

Visitors and residents of Colchester County will benefit from more than $2 million in road improvements this summer.

The province has recently awarded contracts to repave more than 14 kilometres of road in Colchester County, including sections of Highway 102 and Upper River John Road.

"Improving our transportation network builds a stronger economy," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "Road improvements in every part of the province benefit all Nova Scotians and people who visit our province."

The project on Highway 102 includes repaving two sections. One section, between Stewiacke and Brookfield, is north of Como Road, northerly to Shortts Lake Road, about 5.3 kilometres. The other section is near Truro, from the north side of the Robie Street overpass to Trans Canada Highway 104, about 3.4 kilometres. The tender was awarded to Basin Contracting Ltd. Work will be completed by Aug. 31.

The second project in Colchester County involves repaving the Upper River John Road, from Route 311 easterly to Wallace Mingo Road, about 5.4 kilometres. The contract was awarded to S. W. Weeks Construction. Work will be completed by Aug. 31.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains an inventory of 4,100 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from district offices located in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
