Tendering Rules Changing For Gym Floors

TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Tendering Rules Changing For Gym Floors

Provincial tendering rules are changing to allow Nova Scotia manufacturers the opportunity to supply hardwood for public school gym floors.

The province is adjusting its design standards to include Canadian-manufactured hardwood that meets Nova Scotia requirements.

"This change will remove an obstacle that's been in the way of Nova Scotia hardwood companies," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Ron Russell. "We're providing local companies an equal opportunity to supply their hardwood."

Formerly, provincial standards allowed for Maple Floor Manufacturing Association certification only, which excluded Nova Scotia manufacturers.

"Nova Scotia hardwood manufacturers have quality products, and now they can compete based on that quality," said Economic Development Minister Ernest Fage. "We're supporting local businesses and providing value for taxpayers at the same time."

The province consulted with local manufacturers to determine an acceptable quality of hardwood for gym floors.
