MLAs Remember D-Day and Battle of Normandy

Members of the Legislative Assembly today, May 5, recognized the upcoming 60th anniversary of D-Day and paid special tribute to war veterans who fought in the D-Day invasion and in the Battle of Normandy, by inviting them on the legislature floor.

D-Day is widely regarded as the turning point in the Second World War. Tens of thousands of Allied soldiers participated in the landing and, to this day, June 6th, remains an important anniversary.

"Over 14,000 Canadians landed in Normandy on D-Day to participate in a campaign which ultimately led to the liberation of Europe," said Premier John Hamm. "As we approach June 6, it is our duty as Nova Scotians to ensure that the sacrifices made to preserve our freedom and democracy are never forgotten."

"Nova Scotian soldiers were in the middle of the D-Day invasion on Juno Beach," said Darrell Dexter, leader of the Official Opposition. "Today we honour them, and all Canadians who sacrificed so much to secure peace and freedom for us all."

"The anniversary of D-Day is a significant day for all Nova Scotians," said Wayne Gaudet, leader of the Liberal Party. "I am pleased to stand with some of our veterans on the floor of the Nova Scotia legislature and acknowledge their heroic contributions."

Today, veterans of the Normandy campaign were welcomed to the floor of the legislature by MLAs. It is the first time in the history of Nova Scotia that individuals other than elected members and staff were permitted on the floor of the House of Assembly while the legislature was in session.

"This is a fitting tribute to those who fought to protect and preserve the values that are the basis of our system of government," said Premier Hamm. "All MLAs are honoured to welcome veterans of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy to the floor of the House."

Today's ceremony is one of a host of commemorative events -- both national and international -- that will mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day and the Normandy campaign.

On June 6, Premier Hamm will host a reception to honour war veterans who participated in the D-Day invasion and in the Battle of Normandy.
