Minister Introduces Bill to Create Transportation Authority
TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS -Minister Introduces Bill to Create Transportation Authority
An act to create a Capital Region Transportation Authority was introduced in the House of Assembly today, April 27.
Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, said the authority will help co-ordinate transportation responsibilities between the province and Halifax Regional Municipality.
"More and more people are moving into the urban and suburban core and more and more vehicles and drivers are using our roads and highways," said Mr. Russell. "Consequently, the need for efficient co-ordination of provincial and municipal transportation resources is vital to the growth and success of this region. It is our belief that the creation of this transportation authority will help meet the needs of the region, now and in the future."
The transportation authority is expected to co-ordinate the various transportation modes in the region to provide for efficient movement of people, goods and services.
The authority will be governed and administered by a board of directors. Mr. Russell said the composition of the board will be determined by regulation after consulting with the municipality.
