Highway 101 Between Mount Uniacke and Ellershouse Completed

TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Highway 101 Between Mount Uniacke and Ellershouse Completed

Nova Scotians will have smoother and safer travels on Highway 101 now that a section of the roadway between Mount Uniacke and Ellershouse has been twinned.

Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron Russell and federal Transport Minister Tony Valeri today, April 13, announced completion of the twinning.

"I'm very, very pleased that the twinning is complete to Ellershouse and I look forward to the next section of twinning moving forward," said Mr. Russell. "I'm also pleased that this section is open to traffic. Highway safety is of paramount concern to Nova Scotia Transportation and Public Works, and twinned sections of highway increase motorist safety."

"We are delighted to announce the completion of the twinning of this section of Highway 101," said Mr. Valeri. "These improvements will increase the level of service on the highway and will also help decrease fatalities on this key corridor from Halifax to Yarmouth."

Improvements to Highway 101 consisted of twinning 21 kilometres of highway and providing a wider median between the Mount Uniacke interchange (Exit 3) and the Ellershouse Road underpass. Highway 101 is a key east-west transportation corridor that passes through the communities of Halifax, Windsor, Digby and Yarmouth.

Funding for the $27-million project came from the Canada-Nova Scotia Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program (SHIP) agreement. Under SHIP, a total of $34.6 million was jointly contributed on a 50-50 basis by the government of Canada and the government of Nova Scotia to fund improvements to Nova Scotia's highway infrastructure.
