EMO Issues Storm Precautions

A heavy snowfall and freezing rain warning has been issued for most of Nova Scotia, today, March 11. The provincial Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) advises the public to take precautions.

"Heavy snow followed by a significant amount of freezing rain is a dangerous combination," said Ernest Fage, Minister responsible for the Emergency Measures Act. "We are working closely with the Maritime Weather Centre, Nova Scotia Power and other related organizations to ensure we have the most up to date information."

One of the most important things individuals can do is listen for updated weather information or public-safety bulletins and act accordingly. A battery-powered radio and spare batteries will be vital in getting up to date information, especially during power failures.

Everyone should also have an emergency kit ready at all times. In addition to a radio, this kit should include: food, a supply of water, clothing, blankets, medication, flashlight, extra batteries and a first aid kit.

"The forecast freezing rain on top of heavy snow makes us even more vulnerable to icy roads and possible power outages. We can't change the weather but we can do everything possible before the storm begins to ensure we are prepared for any situation," said Mr. Fage.

Individuals are also encouraged to contact people who may be more vulnerable, such as seniors or those living alone, during storms to ensure they have an emergency plan in place.
