Tribute to Sister Peggy Butts
Sister Peggy Butts will always be remembered as a tireless voice for social justice, Premier John Hamm said today, March 8.
The longtime nun, educator, community activist, political scientist and former senator passed away Saturday, March 6, at the age of 79.
"Sister Peggy brought compassion, care and vision to everything she did," said the premier. "For those in our society who needed help in the face of poverty, they always had a friend and ally in Sister Peggy Butts. All Nova Scotians join with me in celebrating Sister Peggy's life of service and devotion to church and community."
Flags at Province House were lowered to half-mast today in her memory.
"On behalf of the people of Nova Scotia, I would like to express deepest sympathies to the family of Sister Peggy, as well as to her many friends and former colleagues," added the premier. "Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and Canada have suffered a great loss."
