Finance Minister Begins Pre-Budget Tour
Nova Scotia Finance Minister Peter Christie kicked off his pre- budget speaking tour on the South Shore today, March 3, telling members of the Bridgewater and Area Chamber of Commerce that Ottawa needs to follow Nova Scotia's lead and properly fund health care.
The Nova Scotia government continues to invest more in health- care programs and services, the minister said, while the federal government's financial support has actually dropped.
"This government has increased the health budget by $350 million over the past five years," said Mr. Christie. "We will continue to invest in Nova Scotians' health care, but without ongoing support from Ottawa, it's getting more and more difficult each year." He noted that health-care costs are expected to grow by seven to 10 per cent each year.
Mr. Christie said that, while the federal government plans to post a surplus in the $7 billion range this year, most provinces will be struggling to balance their budgets.
He said Nova Scotia's upcoming budget will reflect the values and priorities of Nova Scotians by living within our means and continuing to invest in health care and education.
The finance minister will speak next at the Truro Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, March 9.
