Highway Workers Thanked

No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks, the saying goes. And Transportation and Public Works highway workers, as well as department contractors, who continue to work around the clock, deserve that thanks.

"On behalf of Nova Scotians, thank you to everyone involved in clearing our roads and making them safe," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Ron Russell. "You show your dedication to your jobs year-round, but during this record snowfall, you've truly outdone yourselves. It was remarkable how everyone worked together, and how soon roads were opened given the volume of snow and harsh conditions."

The minister also said a special thank you to New Brunswick Department of Transportation staff who assisted the snow clearing operation.

The storm forced the closure of several 100-series highways last week and had an impact on travel provincewide. All major highways were opened by the evening of Friday, Feb. 20, and all provincial roads and provincially maintained roads are open today, Feb. 23. The department will continue to widen roads and clear intersections this week.

Department staff are reminding parents to ensure children do not play or tunnel in snowbanks along roads in coming days, as crews will be pushing back snowbanks.

Staff are also asking the public and private plow operators to continue to push snow off the roadway.

Motorists are advised to use caution near intersections where visibility has been reduced by high snowbanks.
