PREMIER'S OFFICE--Premier Proclaims Women's Institutes Week in Nova Scotia
Premier John Hamm has proclaimed Feb. 15 to 21 as Women's Institutes Week in Nova Scotia.
"Organizations that encourage women through education and personal development are an important part of our society," Premier Hamm said.
"The Women's Institutes have supported and strengthened Nova Scotia's rural families and communities for more than nine decades," said Status of Women Minister Carolyn Bolivar-Getson. "We thank them for their learning, their sharing and for improving the quality of life for all."
This year marks the 91st anniversary of the first Women's Institutes in Nova Scotia. For more information see the website at www.gov.ns.ca/nsaf/wi/ .
The first Women's Institutes branch in Canada was founded in 1897 by Adelaide Hoodless, an Ontario farm wife who began teaching women domestic skills. The organization now has millions of members in affiliated organizations in 70 countries.
