Motorists Advised to Use Caution on Roads and Highways
TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Motorists Advised to Use Caution on Roads and Highways
Motorists are reminded to drive with extra caution during extremely cold temperatures.
Nova Scotia's transportation employees are working around the clock to make the roads as safe as possible. However, when temperatures fall below -10 C, road salt is not effective in keeping roads clear of ice.
Motorists are reminded that bridge decks freeze before the approaching roadway. The road temperature is also different on steep grades and higher elevations.
Black ice is a danger as well, especially when the sun rises in the morning and draws moisture to the surface of the road.
Motorists are advised to call the local base of the Department of Transportation and Public Works if they see problem conditions. Local area bases are available by calling 1-888-432-3233.
The department provides updated road condition reports three times a day, seven days a week in winter by calling toll-free 1- 800-307-SNOW (7669), or 902-424-3933 in Halifax Regional Municipality. The service is also available online at www.gov.ns.ca/tran .
