Human Rights Hearing Looks at Man's Dismissal
HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION--Human Rights Hearing Looks at Man's Dismissal
Nova Scotia's human rights commission has appointed a board of inquiry to consider a complaint of employment discrimination based on disability.
Allen Feltham of South Oldfield, Queen's Co., alleges he was dismissed by Cross Small Engine Repair Limited because of a mental disability. Mr. Feltham has depression.
Mr. Feltham worked as a mechanic at Cross Small Engine Repair for several years on a seasonal basis. Mr. Feltham says he informed his employer in 2001 that he would have to take time off work because of his depression. Two days later he received a letter indicating that his employment had been terminated.
Anne Derrick has been appointed chair of the board of inquiry, which will be heard on Monday, Jan. 26 at 9:30 a.m. in Salon A, Wandlyn Inn, Bridgewater. The hearing is scheduled to continue on Tuesday, Jan. 27 and Wednesday, Jan. 28.
Boards of inquiry are the final stage in the human rights complaint process. They are independent, public hearings into complaints of discrimination.
