Tribute to Robert Stanfield

Premier's Office

All Nova Scotians are saddened by the loss of former premier Robert Stanfield, who died Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the age of 89, Premier John Hamm said today, Dec. 17.

"Few leaders in the history of our province have changed Nova Scotia for the better as much as Robert Lorne Stanfield," said the premier. "From establishing medicare for Nova Scotia families, to pursuing aggressive policies to modernize and expand our economy, Robert Stanfield was a leader who was never afraid to make the difficult choices for a stronger Nova Scotia."

Premier Hamm also noted the service of Robert Stanfield in federal politics, as leader of the official Opposition from 1967 to 1976 and as member of Parliament for Colchester County and Halifax.

"Robert Stanfield brought a remarkable understanding of our country -- based on respect, strength and civility -- that was, and is, missing in public life," added the premier. "We will always wonder how Canada would have moved forward with Robert Stanfield as Prime Minister."

Premier Hamm has directed that all flags at Nova Scotia government buildings be lowered to half-mast. A book of condolences will also be set up at Province House to allow Nova Scotians from all walks of life to express their sympathies to the Stanfield family.

"All Nova Scotians owe Robert Stanfield a debt of gratitude for his decades of commitment to building a better society," said the premier. "Genesta and I join with the people of Nova Scotia in paying tribute to a great Nova Scotian, a great Canadian and a statesman in the truest sense. May Robert Stanfield's wife, Anne, children and family find comfort from the thoughts and prayers that are with them from across the country at this difficult time."
