TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS -Two Colchester County Bridges to be Replaced

Residents of Colchester County are receiving two new bridges.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works is building the new bridges along Route 336 in Colchester County to replace structures that collapsed in the flooding of March 2003. The total cost is $1.7 million.

"This is good news for residents and motorists along Route 336," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "These bridges are important parts of the highway infrastructure in this part of our province."

The replacement for the Eastville Bridge, which crosses the Stewiacke River, will be 37 metres long, while the new Sam Cox Bridge, which crosses Sam Cox Brook, will be 20 metres long.

Dexter Construction Ltd. was awarded the contract. Work is expected to be completed by Jan. 31.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains an inventory of 3,800 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from district offices located in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
